Bandbox Beauty Supply to close due to high tariffs

As many feared, the high cost of imported goods is now taking a toll. Small businesses across the island are feeling the squeeze as they place restock orders. For one local entrepreneur, however, the impact has become untenable. Bandbox Beauty Supply, Langley’s first, and only, beauty and skincare retailer, will officially close its doors this summer.

Though an exact closing date hasn’t been set, owner Sarah-Jean Muncey has confirmed that the 2025 summer season will be her last on Anthes Avenue in downtown Langley.

“Even if I transitioned all my products to U.S.-made, I’d still be operating at a loss because those products cost more for me to carry,” Sarah explained.

While she’s considered various options to keep the business afloat, none seem viable enough to maintain profitability.

“What many people—and obviously the current administration—don’t understand is that the American beauty industry is almost entirely reliant on imports. We simply don’t produce many of the minerals that literally ‘make up’—no pun intended—our beauty and skincare products.”

Bandbox Beauty Supply opened in 2023 during a time when Sarah felt called back to the island to make her mark. Her mission was clear: to provide Langley with an accessible, holistic shopping destination for skincare and beauty. Each brand she carries contributes to charitable causes, making shopping local both a personal and ethical choice. For Sarah, it wasn’t just about selling products; it was about keeping the younger generation—and every generation—engaged in local commerce instead of turning to off-island options like Sephora.

As a loyal customer, I can vouch for the quality of her products. Sarah curated an impressive selection of independent, cruelty-free, women- and minority-owned beauty brands. Most of her stock came from Canada, South Korea, and Mexico, aligning with her vision to support small businesses while offering unique alternatives to department store staples.

Unfortunately, the recent tariff policies, originally introduced during the Trump administration, have made this business model unsustainable. These policies levied heavy taxes on imported goods, including those from Canada, Sarah’s primary supplier.

“Yes, I love this industry, and it’s been a wonderful ride,” Sarah shared. “This was an investment, but if it’s not profitable, then it’s time to shut it down.”

Though the closure is bittersweet to her customers, Sarah is enthusiastic about her next chapter. She’s joining C’est Moi Salon, her longtime neighbor on Anthes Avenue, to return to her roots as a cosmetologist and hairstylist.

“I’ve been a certified cosmetologist and hairstylist for years, even before opening Bandbox. Partnering with a salon that has such a positive vibe makes this transition a little smoother. I’m excited to work in an environment that blends my passions for skincare, hair care, and beauty.”

While this summer will mark the swan song for Bandbox Beauty Supply, it’s just the beginning of a new journey for Sarah. Her next chapter promises to be dynamic, allowing her to fuse her love of beauty with a fresh start.

“There will be some sale announcements in the next month or so as I go through my inventory, so keep an eye out. Please come visit me and stock up!”
